To calculate the number and size of the required solar panels to run your pump.

Once you have determined the correct pump size for your project you need the following information to enable you to size the solar panels and batteries.

  • Daily running time of the pump, ie, 24/7 or daylight only.
  • Total power consumption in watts of the pump and any other power requirements such as a UV-C filter.
  • Pump operating voltage.

Daylight only For daylight only operation with no battery backup, running time approximately six hours in summer, maybe four in winter, depending on your geographical location in Australia.

 Solar panel selection
Total the wattage of all of the components that will be running from the panel then select the next highest (or more) panel wattage. The higher the panel wattage, the longer the system will run, especially in overcast conditions.

 24/7 pump operation

  • Total the wattage of all of the components that will be running from the panel.
  • Divide the total wattage by the panel voltage to get the total amps.
  • Multiply the amps by 24 to get the total daily amps. This is the minimum output required from the solar panels in, at best, six hours or in winter conditions, four hours.
  • Divide the daily amps by six (assuming six hours of suitable sunlight a day) or if in low light conditions, by four. This will give the hourly charging amperage required from the panels.
  • Select panels with size and quantity with the total peak current amps in excess of the hourly rate required.

 Example

  • Assume a 100w load to run 24/7 with 12v system
  • 100/12 = 8.333 amps
  • 8.333 x 24 = 200 daily amps
  • 200/4 = 50 amps per hour
  • From the 110w solar panel, the peak current = 6.47 amp.
  • 50/6.47 = 7.728
  • Therefore you will need 8 x 110w solar panels to have sufficient charging capacity in typical winter conditions.
