What is a biological pond filter?
A biological pond filter is a filter that uses biological means to remove harmful ammonia and excess nutrients from the water.

How long should the Biological Pond filter be run?
The filter must be run 24 hours a day. If it is not the beneficial bacteria will die.

How long will the Biological Pond filter take to work to its full potential ?
I
t may take 4-6 weeks for the filter to establish a large enough bacterial culture to begin effective filtration. However, the longer the filter has been running the more effective it becomes. This process can be accelerated by the addition of BIO-START, a biological culture starter. A sachet of BIO-START can be purchased Creative Pumps, this will treat about 2,250 litres of water.

Will I need to replace or clean any items in the Biological Pond filter?
The only item that will need to be cleaned is the filter foam, this should only be cleaned in pond water, DO NOT use tap water or let the bio-balls dry out, either of these situations will kill the micro-organisms required for the filter to work.

How It Works

Aussie's observations

Suitable for:  Small ponds up to about 1,500 ltrs
What we liked:  Great value for money, a neat little filter
Less than ideal: Based on the price point, not much, the features match the price. Not that rugged but strong enough to do the job.

Filter selection

To choose the ideal filter for any pond you must first know the correct flow through the filter to maintain ideal water quality for your pond. (Please remember that the pond size alone does not determine the filter or pump size without first taking into account the many environmental and physical factors)

Suitable pumps for Clean Pond Filters

Most suitable pump/s**

    Pondmate 1000

Other workable pumps.

Pondmate  700       Project Easy Jet  1200

**Special note, if using a waterfall or a long hose between pump and filter the pump will need to be larger to allow for the reduced flow caused by the head (pumping height, and/or hose length)   If in doubt Fill in one of our e-mail help forms and let us do all the calculations for you.
